Freight trains are the lifeline for small towns like this. They're how all the produce that's grown here gets to the processing plants, and from there to the rest of the world. Other commodities move along these tracks as well. Twice a day, a train loaded with over 100 cars filled with coal make their way from the coal fields of Colorado to Chicago to feed the aging coal-fired boilers buried deep inside older buildings. Apparently that's cheaper than upgrading to more environmentally friendly systems.
